The therapeutic use of castor oil packs was first discovered by Edgar Cayce (1877-1945). It has been used throughout time by natural health practitioners all over the world.
Despite being so simple, using a castor oil pack as part of your holistic routine is an incredibly powerful tool for health.
What is a castor oil pack?
Essentially it is a piece of wool or a cloth soaked in castor oil so you can apply it on the skin. The cloth may be cotton flannel or other dense material that can soak up a lot of liquid.
You can then use a heating pad or hot water bottle to increase the effectiveness of this treatment.
How do you use it?
Most commonly you place the soaked cloth over your liver or entire abdomen. If you want to add heat for added benefits you can then place a plastic sheet over the top of the material and then place a heating pad/hot water bottle over this.
If can also be used on swollen or painful joints as a way to increase circulation and blood flow to the injured/sore part.
CAUTION: Do not use castor oil packs during pregnancy or menstration due to it's effect on increasing blood flow.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits to using a castor oil pack regularly. Here are some of my favourite;
Helps with circulation and blood flow to the digestive system and organs in the abdomen.
Aids digestion and improve bowel movements
Assists liver detoxification
Improve immune function
Improve menstrual cycle symptoms (used in the lead up and after)
Stimulates lymphatic system
Reduce swelling and inflammation
Castor oil packs are my go-to for so many things. It’s one of the rare remedies that you can’t really use “too much”. I love using them regularly as a way to improve blood flow and circulation and help with healing and detox.
